Moms - Pregnancy Edition: Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.

Oh, the mother-daughter relationship. It's a unique one, but one that I feel many of my girlfriends can relate to: they’reso helpful yet infuriating all at once.

Mom came to NYC about a week ago, lugging prepared freezer food for my postpartum healing and a gung-ho attitude, ready to help me transition into motherhood. As her daughter, I get emotional about going through this experience with her because my mom didn't get the maternal and community care that every new mom deserves when she had us.

She lost both of her parents while in high school, on top of coming into a foreign country after the Vietnam War without any of her family. So it really is special for all of us to go through this moment together, writing our family history in a different and better way.

But, in this world, multiple things can be true all at once, including the ability to be so grateful and annoyed 🫠.

Only a week out from her arrival, she's already managed to be incredibly helpful and drive me up the wall.

In one week we've had passive-aggressive purchases, an unsanctioned kitchen renovation, and at least two appliances added to our small Brooklyn apartment that nobody asked for.

But we've also had pedicures, my favorite snacks stocked in the fridge, and a crick worked out of my neck by someone who dropped everything to be here.

That's the mother-daughter relationship for you: equal parts eye-roll and gratitude, sometimes in the same five minutes, but honestly, I wouldn't want anyone else camped out in my kitchen and apartment right now.
