Lessons from Elite Athletes

Ok, I might not seem very athletic - and at this time in my life, I’m definitely not, but I’ve played sports since I was a kid and as I’ve grown up, developed this interest in the mind, team dynamics and the players behind THE player. I think there’s a lot to learn from how Elite Athletes operate, and how we can implement some of these into our lives to help us become a better version of ourselves.

From intimate relationships (i.e. partners and family), environmental settings, to the entire coaching and development staff, it’s informed how I operate personally.

Take for instance UFC (I know…it’s pretty gory, but it’s the behind-the-scenes that I’m more interested in). When I watch it, I’m curious about their team, I want to know THEIR dynamic and environment of training, I just want to know it all because at the end of the day, everyone operates differently and it takes a keen sense of self-awareness and a specific dedicated team to support a goal if and when the player is willing and ready.

When I go and do presentations at corporate offices about energy management and I bring up the analogy of the ‘Elite Athlete’, most people can immediately find some connection to the importance of mindfulness AND having the right people and environment in place.

So with that said, I’d like to share a few lessons that we can take from Elite Athletes and perhaps incorporate aspects of it in our lives.

One key thing I found that sets these individuals apart is their commitment to mindfulness, a practice that goes beyond meditation and into how they operate and train.

Here we go.

1. Present Moment Awareness:

Elite athletes stay fully present in the moment. Whether it's a crucial match point or understanding the new terrain they’re running on and how to adjust their breathing, they understand the power of focusing on the task at hand.

2. Mind-Body Connection:

Elite athletes understand the connection between mind and body. They recognize that a healthy mind fosters a healthy body, and vice versa. Mindfulness practices like visualization, helps them cultivate this mind-body harmony. They practice ongoing awareness of their body's signals and responses, and can make small but big adjustments that can help them prevent injuries and maintain overall well-being in both the short and long term.

3. Emotional Regulation:

Competitive sports brings up a lot of different emotions – from the thrill of victory to the pain of defeat. Mindfulness empowers athletes to go through this emotional rollercoaster with a lot of grace. By cultivating awareness of their emotions and learning to respond, rather than react, maintain composure in high-pressure situations. This emotional regulation not only enhances performance but also contributes to long-term mental well-being.

4. Support Team:

Elite athletes surround themselves with a team comprising of coaches, support staff, healthy relationships, and a physical environment that’s conducive to their success. As we celebrate the achievements of athletes, we have to acknowledge the crucial role support staff and environment plays in nurturing a culture of optimal nutrition, physical and mental skills development & mastery, and support counseling. This ultimately fueling victories both on and off the field.

With that said, when you think about yourself in the most ideal ways, how can you build the right mindset and team to help you?
